Lightworks is a powerful open source NLE that was built for the use of professional editors. Published by EditShare, this video editor has a drag and drop timeline, will auto save your projects as well as provide you with media and metadata management tools. It also comes with support for stereoscopic and 3D workflows.

The software also comes with a support for mixed multicam editing and autosync trimming. Another one of the highlights here is the editing console, which is one of the best in the industry. It has been used by many Hollywood films and it’s easy to see why as it is very intuitive. One of the strengths of the software is in project sharing, allowing you to share edits, bins and media with controlled permissions. All the collaborative features can be done in real time, so it is ideal for use in post-production work.

The timeline by the way, doesn’t just support drag and drop but also insert, fit to fill and other common commands. The application also lets you add effects, modify the clip speed and adjust the volume levels in real time. And you can do all of this in an environment that is flexible and without any clutter, unlike in other NLE out there.

Lightworks is a sophisticated video editor, with a lot of features that you will only find in professional NLE editors. It does have some limitations however. The free version only supports a limited number of codecs such as Avid DNxHD, MPEG 4.2.2 SD/HD, DVCPRO HD and a few others. Even so, the free version still has a lot of useful features, so be sure to check it out.
