Originating from 1230 AD, the Carmina Burana is a set of medieval manuscripts consisting of 254 poems and dramatic text. It was an epic piece of text that was created by theological students mainly to satirize the church. Most of the works centered on subjects such as wealth, the nature of life, financial abuses, joy of Springtime and even the pleasure and perils of drinking.
The Carmina Burana was translated into a beautiful cantata by German composer, Carl Orff in 1937. The composer's version of the Carmina is now available as a free download right on FMA. Performed by none other than the MIT Choir under the direction of Dr. William Cutter (2006).
This is a great piece of classical/medieval music brought to life in these modern times.

Gepel is a jazz trio from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Founded in 2006 they released their first album, Moducué (meaning 'thanks' in Lucumí, a Yoruba dialect), the very same year. The album, which came out under the wings of the Dharmasound Netlabel, is a collection of six wonderful tracks, each showcasing the great musical talents of its members.
So if you are in the mood for original compositions with some excellent deep sounds of bass, heart piercing percussion, and rich piano - Gepel is definitely for you!

A wonderful fusion of rock, funk, folk, jazz, brass with some great sounding guitar, percussion, violin, viola, keyboards, trumpet, sax, bagpipes!?, and yes, even harmonica. It seems that Rei Teytum have it all, except of course for an English version of their bio anywhere on the Internet.
So it is times like this that I wish I spoke more languages to bring you important information about the artists. But since that will simply not happen lets focus on their fantastic album, "Viajeros" ("Travelers"), and the tiny bits of band history I was able to get (courtesy of my friend Google Translate).

Juanitos first showed up on our blog all the way back in June 2009. And now with more of great albums under its belt (including over 400 concerts and hundreds of thousands of downloads - if not more) I thought it might be a right time for a little re-introduction; especially that after our crazy winter I'm sure we are all in need of some 'summer night party' sounds.
Heading straight from Chamébry, France, the band is incorporating everything from latin soul, exotica, punk, rock'n'roll, reggae, acid jazz, surf rock, and funk into its spontaneous and "100% good vibes" musical collection.

Some time ago Intrahealth International released a special remix in honor of World Malaria Day. The project was put together by rapper Mopreme Shakur, brother of the late Tupac, and soon included ten tracks all being a remix of Youssou N'Dour's song "Wake up - It's Africa Calling". The purpose of the project was to address the most critical health issues in Africa by bringing greater awareness of and support for open source training/development for health workers across the continent.

I fell in love with the series nearly two years ago during one of my lovely commutes to work for one simple reason - it brings you the most amazing variety of music just in time when you can no longer listen to the same songs you had on your iPod since 2000. Each podcast comes with a theme and a selection of sounds (from nearly every genre imaginable, with a slightly greater love for alternative and indie rock) put together by some of the greatest DJs from Northwest.
