Seattle is home to a number of great performers and festivals (as Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival) worthy of an extended stay. And now Fan Fiction can be easily added to this long list of musical goodness.

Released in July of 2011, The Redbirds, is a collection of five beautiful tracks filled with rock and roll guitars, spot on vocals, and the great laid back sound; a combination that surely makes this one an indie rock release not to be missed.

The EP starts off with Redbirds and quickly gives us a taste of the bands chilled out, rock feel. The track sets off with guitars reminding me of a U2 musical progression, yet it’s vocal additions and lyrics fill it with its own unique touch. Horse’s Head on the other hand begins with a rather laid back guitar solo and soft vocals ready to take you back into the blissful, no-worries autumn days and just might become your perfect companion during the upcoming Sundays at the local cafe.

The Redbirds is a great little compilation filled with sounds of endless guitars, crisp vocals appearing in all the right places, and powerful drums spicing up the record by taking many of the songs from the chill beginnings to the more energetic finishes.
The album is a solid take on the genre and it’s professional execution turns it into a real treat.

At present Fan Fiction is made of five amazing musicians, Steven Rossan, vocals and guitar; William Bernhard on guitar, keyboards, and tambourine solos; Bo Gilliland on bass and vocals; Paul Culala on drums and vocals; and Lucien LaMotte, guitar and vocals. Yet the boys did not start off as a five piece crew; instead they came together gradually as the band progressed and grew into it’s current, filled with relaxed vibe, rock and roll signature sound.
In fact the very first steps taken by the band were made by no other than Rossan and LaMotte when the duo set off to record several new songs with producer Tucker Martine (R.E.M, Laura Veirs, Long Winters, Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens). After highly successful first try the Seattle duo was soon joined by it’s remaining members.

The album is available as a ‘free/pay what you want’ download from the band’s Bandcamp page.
