Foreign Fields: Little Lover EP

Certain music fits a certain mood or setting. It is raining outside and you are locked inside your house with nothing to do but stare outside the window, little drops of rain trickling down the glass. Or, it is 2 a.m. and you are suddenly jolted awake with no hopes of returning to sleep soon so you fix yourself a cup of coffee and sit in the dark, stirring the spoon in the hot mug. For both scenarios, Foreign Fields’ Little Lover album can suddenly play in the background and it wouldn’t disrupt anything.

Scowler: How To Find Light

We will never run out of new bands to discover and new music to try. With the great number of bands breaking musical boundaries, the number of new genres are also staggering. Meet Scowler, a band who self-decribes their sound as “Milwaukee non-denominational hardcore”. But can we all agree that amidst all these new multi-hyphenated genres, all good music will just be defined as what it really is? Good music.

Father Figure: People Leave

People Leave is the debut release of Father Figure – a musical act of two people who have been collaborating musically for years. Composed of Sean Steinmetz and Matthew Babenko, both sharing vocals and guitar duties, and are both from Brookhaven, Pennsylvania.

Minus the Bear

Seattle has always been a breeding ground for great rock bands – see Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bikini Kill, Death Cab For Cutie. The list could go on and on. There must be something about the Seattle landscape that influences its people to create music from different genres. Take Minus The Bear, for example. This indie rock band has been around since 2001 and boasts “sophisticated time signature composition.”

Gregory Porter

Grammy-awardee Gregory Porter is a force to reckon with in the world of jazz and R&B music. Want proof? His latest release, Liquid Spirit, won the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album. This LA-born and California-bred grew up as a football player until a shoulder injury sidelined his future as an athlete. Bad luck on his young self but good news for jazz aficionados out there as this little bend in the corner gave us this crafty and soulful singer.

Stars: No One Is Lost Tour EP

Canadian indie-rock band Stars has been around since 2000 and they show no sign of slowing down as they release a new five-track No One Is Lost Tour EP. It is hard to believe that it has been more than a decade since the band’s breakout album Set Yourself on Fire. Their latest EP is a tight collection showing the band’s dance-y and electronica side.

Wilderness: Pyesta EP

There is a certain kind frenzy to the sound of Wilderness, a band with a highly infectious sound from the Philippines. What started out as a three-piece band has now evolved into a “9 headed, hot-blooded explosion of groove and love.” The band makes it hard for anyone who listens to them to be still and remain unmoved.
