Fresh Body Shop: The Ugly Army

The Ugly Army is the fourth album released by Fresh Body Shop just last June. Heavy bass riffs and snappy drum beats dominate the seven tracks of this new album while the vocals are kept husky, even whispery, but not really to the point of being annoyingly distracting. Guitar and piano leads are kept to a minimum but they're cleanly and precisely executed. As for lyrics, they aren't fussy or overly angsty---you'll notice that they're not really the objective of this collection. The real goal is to showcase the (both real and synthesized) instrument skills of the artist.

America Del Sur – a self-titled surfer/rock/punk/jazz album from Florida

America Del Sur (or America of the South) was an indie band with Phil Cardona and Taylor Ross at the helm. Both are high school friends based in Jacksonville, Florida who distributed their music through the net label Rack & Ruin Records. Their style is an eclectic mix of jazz, post punk, indie rock, and teenage surfer twang which gives them a distinctive sound that is - however hard to categorize - quite pleasing to the ear. You'd have to listen to them to understand exactly what I mean.

Cakeflap “The Bakery is Open” – The Fiercest One-Track Album Ever

The album The Bakery is Open is the debut album of Cakeflap - a four-member band from UK. According to their Myspace page, the band started as just a collaboration of four 'disgruntled employees' who've had 'one too many Digestives'. They then decided to make exhaustingly long songs that run for as long as 20 minutes! The Bakery is Open is a one-track album and that single track is a medley of 18 different instrumental songs. Very understandably, cakeflap describes their music as progressive rock and jazz fusion.

Jamison Young “Shifting Sands of a Blue Car” – a free alternative pop/folk rock album from Prague

Jamison Young is a rock live performer who for a while now has been singing and writing songs only licensed under Creative Commons. Nowadays, he plays concerts in different places across Europe, as he is based out of Prague. Last year a song from his latest album, Shifting Sands of a Blue Car, was included in the soundtrack to the The X-Files: I Want to Believe movie. Jamison Young likes to listen to songs from the 60's and the 80's and contemporary Creative Commons artists. According to him, the songs he likes are those that he "can listen to again and again yet still stay fresh".

WhiteRoom – a neoromantic pop album by WhiteRoom

Ever heard of neoromantic pop? I must confess that I haven't, that is, until I came across WhiteRoom's self-titled album. "WhiteRoom" is fast-paced, mournful, and thoughtful---all in equal measures. The sound is quite unique. "If Radiohead’s unborn bastard children had survived, been raised on a steady diet of Massive Attack, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and Duke Ellington, you might have managed to engineer a group like WhiteRoom," says one music review. I couldn't agree more.

Escarlatina Obsessiva “Pandemic” – free punk-rock album from Brazilian duo

Escarlatina Obsessiva is a rock duo from Brazil, made up of Karolina (who plays the bass and provides the vocals) and Zaf (who plays the guitar, keyboards, and synthesizers). The duo was formed in 2006, and is influenced by European post punk and American punk rock bands from the 1980s. Escarlatina Obsessiva has already released two albums, "Chants of Lethe" and "Blossomy Parks." Their latest album release is entitled "Pandemic," and it has just been released on the French netlabel Zorch Factory. The album features ten brand-new punk and post-punk tracks.

“Trip to Trip” – a free electro-punk album by Ben et Béné

Ben et Béné is an Electro-8bit-Punk duo from France. Ben started playing his own music in 2003 after singing and playing in other punk and indie rock groups, composing his music on a cheap computer, then Gameboy and Reason. Béné, who just qualified for art-school, shows her "Real Video," which is a blend of TV movies and domestic video, during their concerts. Ben et Béné recently released "Trip to Trip," a CD/DVD combo EP, via Da! Heard It Records. Now, all the songs and videos from that EP are available for download for free via the record label's website.

Fhernando “Sweet Addiction” – a free Creative Commons licensed dance album, now on FrostWire

Fhernando is a great young Mexican DJ whose most recent album, "Sweet Addiction", got some amazing reviews on free music download websites and social networks. Fhernando, or Fernando Ramires Rios, has been composing music since he was a teenager and has already released several EPs and singles. "I Love New York", his previous release, was a house/trance/electro composition. "Sweet Addiction" falls in between the disco/house/funk genres, with more complicated arrangements and "sexy & glam" style. Both are happy, energetic and capturing.
