Sumatra PDF is an open source PDF reader and viewer for Windows. Developed by Krzysztof Kowalczyk, it’s a good example of the saying that less is more, as the program offers just exactly what you need without bloatware. In other words, the Sumatra PDF viewer doesn’t have features that slow your computer down.

Sumatra is stripped down to the basics, which means all the essentials you want are here. If you’re tired of the large PDF programs that take forever to download and very slow to run, you’ll like this as it isn’t clunky and actually runs very smoothly.

Once you run Sumatra you’ll see that it has a very intuitive design with just a toolbar and a few menus. The options include zooming in and out of a page, book view and facing page. Sumatra PDF also lets you view PDF files in presentation mode, full screen mode and rotate the pages as well.

There’s a search box where you can look for text in the PDF, and you have the option to start your default email application from the program. From there you can have the PDF automatically attached to a new email.

The program is very easy to figure out but in case you’re having trouble there’s a help file available including a list of keyboard shortcuts it uses. Sumatra PDF is compact enough to fit in a USB drive so you can bring it along with you anywhere you go. This is, in short, a very useful and no-nonsense app that works beautifully and without frills.
