Phoenix HD from Firi Games is a top down space shoot ‘em up, and it’s the sort of mindless rapid fire game casual players will like. It’s also for anyone who loves shooters without having to worry about complex plots and mastering several controls.

It’s easy to get in the game: slide your finger anywhere across the screen to avoid the alien ships coming at you. If your ship gets hit, destroy the enemy turrets and collect the power ups that appear. As you play the game you can pick up shields, new weapons and other cool stuff.

There are no modes, stages or extra buttons here: just slide your finger along and make sure blow the enemy craft before they blow you. While it is a simplistic approach, it does work and makes it accessible for casual gamers. The early stages of the game are easy, but later on they become difficult, but that’s par for the course with these types of games.

Even though Phoenix HD has a simple premise, the graphics are well-designed and the sounds that accompany the battles are nicely done too. The longer you’re able to last, the higher your score gets, and part of the fun is trying to top the leaderboard against your friends.

If you’re not in the mood for complex games, Phoenix HD is for you. You don’t have to spend a lot of time learning how the game works so it’s the type you can quickly pick it up and play.
