7-Zip – an open source file compression software

It can be a problem sometimes because the files they need to bring with them are bigger than their free space. Worry no more - 7-Zip is here to the rescue. 7-Zip is an open source software for file compression and archiving, and unlike others, it offers a high compression ratio - definitely perfect for those big files that need to be shrinked.

It might not be possible now to tour the Solar System or the universe (unless you are a billionaire!), but you can do this in the comforts of your home right in front of your computer. Celestia is an open-source space simulation software that lets you explore the universe in 3-dimension - stars, galaxies, planets, asteroids and a whole lot more! And the best part? It runs on Windows, Linux and Max OS X.

For those people who loved Gimp, a powerful open-source image retouching and authoring software, then you will love GimpShop. Think of it as a revamped version of Gimp, giving a Photoshop feel to the software. GimpShop is a hacked version of Gimp. Since most people are used to having an Adobe Photoshop interface, Scott Moschella did what a usual 'hardcore graphics geek' might do: change the interface of Gimp so that people are more comfortable using it.

WinSCP

WinSCP is an open source free FTP & sFTP client for Windows. Beyond file transfer, WinSCP offers file management & file synchronization functionality. One of it's biggest advantages its simple user interface - which mimics Windows Explorer (there is one that mimics Norton Commander as well) in both looks and functionality - making a it extremely user-friendly for an avid Windows users. For me, drag-and-drop feature and the ability to see my folder structure is very handy. Even the tool icons look the same as in Windows Explorer, so you will never get lost, even without a manual or a geeky friend next to you.

Frets on Fire

Frets on Fire was created as an entry to the Assembly 2006 Game Development Competition by Unreal Voodoo and it placed first in the competition. The game tests your musical skills and the speed of your fingers in a similar way to the very popular Guitar Hero games do, but instead of forcing you to buy the guitar controllers, the game & the console, it lets you play your favorite tunes free using your keyboard and your home computer (and it is available for PC, Mac & Linux). Of course if you would like to, you can also use the guitar controllers or generic joysticks.
